Edinburgh Festival: Robert Golding (2 stars)

What seems like an Alan Ayckbourn-esque love triangle, between a red-wine swilling, shitake mushroom-eating couple and a mysterious interloper, takes an unexpected twist when it lurches into the realms of science fiction.

Jen and her husband, who works in banking, are opening a restaurant, Ariadne’s. The significance of the name becomes clear when Mark, a conspiracy theorist specialising in “hidden truths”, turns up with a secret agenda.

Writer Owen Thomas’s dialogue is sharp, pacey and, at times, funny, while the performances are confidently booming.

But the final twist is unconvincing, bordering on farcical, despite the cast’s admirable attempts to pull it off.
